Liang vs Phua / 梁 vs 潘

About the painting:

Liang vs Phua brings together two of Singapore's most unlikely national treasures: Liang Popo, the sweetly straightforward, good-natured grandmother beloved by Chinese-speaking households, and Phua Chu Kang, the Hokkien contractor whose "Don't play play" Singlish crossed straight into English-speaking living rooms. Both shows ruled the same late-1990s golden age of local TV. Both made an entire region laugh until it cried. Yet despite being practically "neighbours" on the same channel, the two comedians never once crossed paths on screen.

Today, this painting finally gets to finish that joke. Here, the impossible meeting finally happens: Liang Popo and contractor Phua overlap and stagger across the canvas, caught mid-scene like a TV signal losing sync, frozen in the moment they're still bickering, still gesturing, still very much themselves.

The painting is built in the "Pixel Noise" aesthetic, a style under the artist's "Pop Iconism" direction: thousands of small strokes mimicking the flicker and scan-line static of an old RCA television. It echoes how these memories actually travelled: from analogue broadcast to digital-quality YouTube clips, from living room to hand phone screen, glitching a little more with every jump, but never quite disappearing.

The noise isn't a flaw. It's where the memory lives. Somewhere in that flicker sits inherited humour, and a stubborn, cheerful, optimistic attitude, passed down not through lectures, but through laughter.

創作理念：
《梁 vs 潘》 集合了新加坡最不可思議的兩位國民瑰寶：梁婆婆，深受華語家庭喜愛、憨厚老實的祖母角色；以及潘厝港（Phua Chu Kang），那位滿口「Don't play play」新式英語（Singlish）的福建承包商，深入每個講英語家庭的客廳。兩部劇集同樣稱霸九十年代末本地電視的黃金時代，同樣讓整個地區的觀眾笑到流淚。然而，儘管兩部劇集幾乎是同一頻道上的"鄰居"， 兩位喜劇演員在劇集中素未謀面 ，從未有過交集。

今天這幅畫，終於要把這個笑話給講完。在畫面中，那場不可能發生的相遇終於實現：梁婆婆與潘承包商在畫布上重疊、錯位排列，彷彿電視訊號失去同步的瞬間，定格於他們依然鬥嘴、依然比手畫腳、依然做回自己的那一刻。

這幅畫以「像素噪點」美學技法完成，是藝術家「流行符號（Pop Iconism）」創作方向下的一種風格：以成千上萬的細小筆觸，模擬舊式 RCA 電視機那種閃爍、掃描線雜訊的畫面質感。這也呼應了這些記憶實際流傳的方式：從類比廣播到數碼畫質的 YouTube 片段，從客廳電視到手機螢幕，每一次跳轉都多一分模糊雜訊，卻始終沒有真正消失。

雜訊不是缺陷，而是記憶棲身之所。在那閃爍之中，藏著代代相傳的幽默感，以及一種倔強、樂觀、笑口常開的生活態度，這不是靠說教傳下來的，而是靠笑聲。
